In a notable political shift in Benue State, Hon. Iorlumnun Samuel Zawaua, a former House of Assembly candidate under the Young Peoples Party (YPP), has officially defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Zawaua, who contested the Konshisha State Constituency seat on the YPP platform during the 2023 general elections, announced his decision to join the APC last week Saturday. The indigene of Konshisha Local Government Area cited his alignment with a more viable political platform as the key reason for the move.

The defection represents another setback for the YPP in Benue, where the party has struggled to maintain its foothold since the last election cycle. Analysts view Zawaua’s switch as a strategic gain for the APC, particularly in Konshisha, where it strengthens the party’s grassroots presence and appeal among local political figures.

This development comes amid a broader trend in Benue and other parts of the country, where opposition members have increasingly gravitated toward the APC, drawn by its governing position and ongoing development initiatives under Governor Hyacinth Alia. Political observers note that such defections often signal shifting dynamics ahead of future elections, as parties seek to consolidate support in key constituencies.

Zawaua’s move is expected to bolster APC’s structure in Konshisha and contribute to the weakening of smaller opposition parties like the YPP in the state. As Benue continues to witness these realignments, the political landscape remains fluid, with implications for upcoming electoral contests.
