In a surprising turn of events, Hon. Terseer Ugbor, the federal lawmaker representing Kwande/Ushongo Constituency in the House of Representatives, has officially withdrawn his ₦1 billion defamation lawsuit against Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, and two of the governor’s media aides. The decision, announced on November 1, 2025, underscores Ugbor’s commitment to prioritizing legislative duties and fostering peace over prolonged legal battles.

The lawsuit, filed in October 2024 under suit number MHC/422/24, stemmed from allegations that Ugbor claimed were defamatory. It also named the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Tersoo Kula, and Principal Special Assistant on Electronic Media, Mr. Isaac Uzaan, as co-defendants. According to Ugbor, the defendants failed to file a defense, an omission that could have resulted in a default judgment in his favor. Despite this advantageous position, he chose to drop the case following appeals from family members, colleagues, and constituents.

It remains to be seen how this development will impact relationships within the state’s leadership, but Ugbor’s focus on public service signals a renewed dedication to governance over personal grievances. As Benue continues to navigate its socio-economic hurdles, actions like these could pave the way for more collaborative progress among elected officials.
