Dr. Benjamin Ashaver, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, disclosed the development on Tuesday during the second-quarter agricultural sector technical coordination meeting held in Makurdi. He described the project as a key component of the state government’s broader strategy to enhance agricultural productivity and ensure sustainable food availability for residents.

According to the Commissioner, the grain reserve system will provide strategic storage solutions that protect harvests from spoilage and market volatility. By minimizing losses after harvest, the initiative is expected to support farmers, improve supply chains, and contribute to overall economic stability in the agriculture-dependent state.

Benue, often referred to as the nation’s food basket, has significant potential in crop production, particularly grains like rice, maize, and yam. However, challenges such as inadequate storage infrastructure have historically led to substantial wastage and price fluctuations that affect both producers and consumers.
