The Buruku Local Government Council, under the leadership of Executive Chairman Hon. Raymond Zege Aondoakura, celebrated Children’s Day 2026 in grand style with a colourful event held at the Tombo Secondary School Playground.
In a unique highlight of the day, executive powers were symbolically handed over to 6-year-old Master Dyorough Ka-Aondo Kelvin as Child Chairman. Speaking shortly after assuming the seat, the young leader described the opportunity as historic and commended the council for giving children a voice in governance.
Master Ka-Aondo Kelvin declared scholarships for ten pupils across the local government to promote academic excellence. He also directed the immediate distribution of sanitary pads to all school girls in Buruku, stressing that no girl should miss education due to natural circumstances. The Child Chairman further issued a strong appeal against child trafficking, warning perpetrators to face the full weight of the law, and called for sustained peace and security to create a conducive learning environment.
The First Lady of Buruku Local Government Council, Hon. Mrs. Dorothy Anadoo Zege, officially flagged off the distribution of no fewer than 2,761 packs of sanitary pads to adolescent female students, with more supplies planned for schools in the Mbanyam axis.
The celebration featured exciting activities including cultural displays, march-past parades, sack races, and various competitions for primary and secondary school pupils. In a unity football match between Tombo and Mbanyam teams, Mbanyam emerged victorious. Winners across categories received trophies and cash prizes.
The colourful event brought together pupils, students, teachers, traditional rulers, parents, and top government officials, ending with renewed calls to prioritise the welfare, education, and protection of children as critical investments in the future of Buruku Local Government Area.
