A serious allegation has emerged in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, where some volunteer guards are reportedly stopping young people, mostly at night, searching their phones, and branding them “yahoo boys.”
According to a post by activist Ukan Kurugh, the guards allegedly threaten to hand over the victims to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) unless they pay money into a designated account.
Describing the development as deeply troubling, Ukan Kurugh expressed caution about the ongoing push for state policing, warning that power without proper oversight can easily be abused.
He issued a strong warning to anyone involved in such acts, stating that if credible evidence surfaces and anyone is caught engaging in these extortion practices, they will be made to answer to the appropriate authorities.
“Consider this a clear warning,” he added.
The post has sparked reactions among residents, with many expressing concern over the possibility of vigilante groups turning into tools of harassment and extortion rather than providing genuine security.
This incident highlights the delicate balance required in community security initiatives and raises questions about accountability and regulation of volunteer or vigilante groups operating in the state.
As of now, there has been no official reaction from security agencies or the state government regarding the allegations.
