Communities in Ananum, a settlement in Donga Local Government Area of Taraba State, are living in fear following a series of violent attacks reportedly carried out by armed Fulani militias who allegedly fled security operations in nearby Peva Chanchajahi.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the groups, after clashing with security forces and regrouping in areas such as Tarveshimimam near Zambambena village, have now turned their attention to Ananum. Residents say the militias are deliberately targeting Tiv inhabitants, setting homes ablaze, and positioning themselves close to residential zones in what locals describe as a strategic escalation.
Several houses have reportedly been set on fire in the community, sparking widespread panic and forcing many families to confront immediate threats to their lives and property. Community members warn that without swift and decisive intervention, the situation risks spiraling into broader violence and further displacement.
A resident, speaking on condition of anonymity for safety reasons, recounted the ordeal: “The Fulani militias ran from Peva and are now in our village, burning houses. If security does not act fast, many of us are not safe.”
Another community leader appealed directly to authorities, stating: “We appeal to the state government and security agencies to intervene before the situation escalates further. Lives and properties are at stake, and we cannot continue to watch helplessly.”
Ananum’s location near contested border zones between farming communities has made it particularly vulnerable amid ongoing tensions in parts of Taraba State. Locals insist the attacks are not random but appear coordinated, heightening anxiety among Tiv residents who say they feel increasingly exposed.
Calls for urgent action have intensified, with community representatives urging Taraba State security agencies, including police and other relevant forces, to deploy personnel immediately to restore calm, protect civilians, and prevent additional loss of life or destruction of homes.
As of the latest reports, no official confirmation or detailed response has been issued by state authorities or security commands regarding the incidents in Ananum. The situation remains tense, with residents pleading for rapid deployment to avert what they fear could become a more widespread crisis in the area.
