UK High Commissioner Praises Governor Alia’s Peace Efforts in Benue, Pledges Continued Support

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, has commended Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia and his administration for their significant progress in restoring peace, stability, and security across Benue State.

The commendation came during a courtesy visit paid to the High Commissioner in Abuja on Thursday, February 26, 2026, by Governor Alia and his delegation. Dr. Montgomery specifically highlighted the state government’s sustained efforts to facilitate the safe return of internally displaced persons (IDPs) to their ancestral communities, describing these initiatives as critical steps toward lasting reconciliation and development.

He assured Governor Alia that the United Kingdom remains committed to supporting peace-building, humanitarian, and development programmes in Benue, emphasising continued partnership in areas vital to the state’s recovery and growth.

In response, Governor Alia expressed deep appreciation for the United Kingdom’s longstanding support and reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to deepening collaboration with the UK in key sectors including economic development, education, security, information and communications technology (ICT), trade, and sustainable growth.

The Governor outlined several flagship measures being implemented by his administration, such as the Benue State Action Plan for Durable Solutions, the Contingency Plan for IDPs, and the Strategic Plan for Peace and Reconciliation. These frameworks, he explained, are designed to promote inclusive dialogue, ensure rapid response to displacement incidents, address root causes of conflict, and build enduring peace among all communities in the state.

“Benue is open to strategic and sustainable partnerships that drive progress and prosperity for all,” Governor Alia stated, underscoring the importance of international cooperation in achieving lasting stability and development.

Accompanying the Governor on the visit was Chief Solomon Iorpev, his Technical Adviser on Media, Publicity, and Strategic Communications.
