Today, the Tor Institution in Tiv Land marks a significant milestone, celebrating 79 years since its establishment. On this day, September 19, 2025, the institution reflects on its rich history and enduring legacy, tracing its origins back to September 19, 1946, when HRM Orchivivirgh Makir Dzakpe was appointed as the first Tor Tiv. This historic appointment marked a pivotal moment, bringing unity and cohesion to the Tiv people.
The Tor Institution has since been a cornerstone of leadership and tradition in Tiv Land. Following Tor Dzakpe, a series of distinguished leaders have upheld this legacy. Their Royal Majesties Gondu Aluor, Akperan Orshi, Akawe Torkula, and the current Tor Tiv, HRM Orchivivirgh Prof James Ortese Iorzua Ayatse, have each contributed to the institution’s growth and influence.
The celebration highlights the institution’s role in fostering a sense of community and cultural identity among the Tiv people. As the current Tor Tiv, Prof James Ortese Iorzua Ayatse continues to lead with wisdom and dedication, building on the foundations laid by his predecessors.
