The Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi (MOAUM), is set to address its longstanding accommodation challenges with a significant partnership. The university has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a private developer to construct a 1,600-bed students’ hostel, a move announced by the acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Simon Ubwa, during a recent chat with journalists in Makurdi.

Prof. Ubwa highlighted that Nigerian universities are grappling with inadequate hostel accommodations. The new 1,600-capacity hostel is a crucial step toward alleviating this issue for MOAUM students. He further noted that the federal government will complement these efforts by partnering with developers to build a separate hostel dedicated to medical students, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s administration scheme to enhance accommodation for medical students across Nigerian universities.

The initiative, supported by TETFund and private developers, aims to substantially improve housing options by next year. However, Prof. Ubwa acknowledged a persistent challenge, stating, “In the entire Nigerian university system, there is no university with adequate hostel accommodation. As we are talking, the situation remains the same, and there is no way that we can accommodate all the students on campus.”
