As Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, prepares to visit Benue State tomorrow, a strong call has emerged for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the state to use the opportunity to seek answers from Governor Hyacinth Alia regarding the utilization of an N11 billion donation made during her previous visit for the welfare of displaced persons.
In a Facebook post on Monday, Tivta Samuel Aondohemba urged IDPs not to remain silent during the high-profile visit. He called on them to question how the substantial funds were spent and why many displaced persons continue to live in difficult conditions despite the huge donations received on their behalf.
The post highlighted the ongoing plight of IDPs, particularly the deaths of children in IDP camps from snake bites and other preventable causes, despite repeated appeals for assistance that reportedly went unanswered.
“In the presence of the First Lady, the IDPs deserve clear answers. The money was donated for their welfare, and they have every right to know how it was utilized,” the statement emphasized.
The renewed calls for transparency come amid persistent concerns over the living conditions of displaced persons in Benue State, especially victims of attacks in communities like Yelewata. The First Lady’s visit is expected to focus on the Renewed Hope Initiative, but many residents hope it will also address lingering questions about past interventions.
