A devastating flood has swept through several communities in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, after hours of heavy rainfall submerged homes, roads, schools, businesses and other properties. A 10-year-old girl was reportedly among those affected, losing her life in the floodwaters.
The incident has left residents shaken as families continue to count their losses following one of the heaviest rainfalls recorded in parts of the city in recent days. Communities including Achusa, Wadata, Wurukum, Logo, Ankpa Quarters, North Bank, Idye and Naka Road were among those impacted by the flooding.
Reports from the affected areas indicate that floodwater entered homes and business premises, leaving some residents stranded and forcing others to move their belongings to safer locations. The most painful account involved the young girl who was reportedly swept away by the rising waters.
Residents and local authorities are assessing the full extent of the damage as recovery efforts begin in the hard-hit neighbourhoods.
