The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUUU) at Father Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi (FAUAM), has threatened to embark on an indefinite strike over a range of unresolved welfare issues affecting its members.

In a statement issued on Saturday by the union’s secretary, Daniel Chile, the lecturers listed several long-standing grievances, including 22 months of outstanding salary arrears linked to the implementation of the national minimum wage, the 25/35 per cent wage award, and the Earned Academic Allowances (EAA).

The statement also highlighted promotion arrears owed to some staff members dating back to 2018, as well as alleged inconsistencies and irregularities in the remittance of contributory pension deductions to staff pension accounts. Shortfalls and omissions in the payment of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) to certain lecturers were additionally cited.

Despite previous meetings with the university management to address these concerns, the union said no clear timeline has been provided for resolution. The statement revealed that the 2025 ASUUU-federal government agreement has been forwarded to the university administration for the second time under the current leadership, yet no meaningful progress has been recorded.

The union warned that it would be compelled to activate its industrial action “if no meaningful step is taken.” It added that the matter could be escalated to the next National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the union if the issues remain unresolved.

The threat comes amid ongoing discussions about staff welfare at the state-owned institution, with lecturers insisting that their demands are legitimate and long overdue.

No official response has been issued by the university management or the Benue State Government as of the time of this report. The development has raised concerns among students and parents about potential disruptions to academic activities should the strike proceed.
