The Acting Provost of the Benue State College of Health Technology, Agasha, Mr. Cosmos Alom, has directed the immediate evacuation of students from the institution’s hostels to safe locations following heightened communal clashes between two neighbouring communities in the area. The directive, issued earlier this week, was described as a proactive safety measure aimed at protecting the lives of students and ensuring their safe and orderly movement away from the affected areas.
In response to the security situation, the Acting Provost made immediate logistical arrangements for the evacuation exercise, including the provision of the institution’s bus to assist in transporting students to safer locations. The management also worked to ensure that students were evacuated in an organised manner without unnecessary panic. Mr. Alom subsequently issued an official memo to students and parents, informing them of the security situation around the institution.
While acknowledging the seriousness of the incident, he appealed to parents and guardians to remain calm, assuring them that the situation was being closely monitored and that appropriate measures had been put in place to safeguard the students. The Acting Provost emphasised that the decision to evacuate the students was purely precautionary and was taken in the best interest of their safety and wellbeing. He further urged members of the public, parents and guardians to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information capable of creating unnecessary fear or tension.
According to the Acting Provost, the institution will continue to monitor developments in the area and will communicate officially to students, parents and the general public once normalcy has returned and a safe date for the resumption of academic activities has been determined.
