The Benue State Executive Council has brought clarity and closure to the lingering fertilizer contract controversy that rocked the early months of the Alia administration. After months of thorough investigation, the council on Thursday, 4th December 2025, approved payment for 84 contractors whose claims were verified as genuine, while blacklisting several others found to have supplied substandard products or engaged in sharp practices. Errant companies will also face recovery actions for funds already paid.

Briefing journalists after the council meeting, Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dr. Peter Egbodo, revealed that a special committee set up to scrutinize every transaction has submitted its final report. Each approved contractor will still undergo fresh procurement due-diligence checks before receiving payment, underscoring the administration’s determination to entrench transparency and accountability in governance.

In a related development, the council commended security agencies for what it described as “swift and coordinated efforts” that have brought relative calm to parts of the state. Government House sources say daily security surveillance remains intense, with every local government area now under close watch.

Amid the serious business of governance, there was also room for celebration. Council members took time to rejoice over the growing national and international recognition pouring in for Governor Hyacinth Alia. Recent honours from the Nigeria Union of Journalists, the Association of Telecommunication Companies of Nigeria, PEBC, and the Clean Nigeria initiative were described as testament to the governor’s rising profile and the positive image Benue is projecting under his leadership.

An excited Governor Alia immediately directed that a special day be set aside to celebrate all exceptional Benue students and achievers across the country.
