Alia Pushes for Stronger Austria-Benue Partnership on Peacebuilding, Agriculture and Economic Growth

Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has called for a deeper and more structured partnership with the Republic of Austria to strengthen peacebuilding efforts, boost agricultural productivity, enhance humanitarian response, and drive long-term economic transformation.

The governor made the call at the Government House, Makurdi, while receiving the Austrian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Peter Guschelbauer, and his delegation on a courtesy visit. Represented by the Deputy Governor, Barr. Dr. Sam Ode, Governor Alia described the visit as a reflection of growing international confidence in Benue State.

Governor Alia commended the Austrian Government and its embassy for their consistent support for mediation and peacebuilding initiatives in the state, particularly through collaboration with faith-based organisations and community leaders. He highlighted the establishment of the Benue State Bureau for International Cooperation and Development (BIC D) as a strategic framework to coordinate all international partnerships.

As the Food Basket of the Nation, the governor emphasized Benue’s vast arable land and agricultural potential, seeking strategic partnerships in agriculture, agro-processing, storage, mechanisation, irrigation, renewable energy, vocational education, and climate resilience.

He stressed that sustainable peace goes beyond the absence of conflict, but includes justice, opportunity, inclusion, and hope, while reaffirming the state’s openness to partnerships that deliver practical results.

The Austrian Ambassador, Mr. Peter Guschelbauer, said his visit marked an important step in strengthening bilateral relations. He expressed Austria’s interest in supporting peacebuilding and sustainable development, leveraging its industrial and technological expertise alongside Benue’s agricultural resources.

The Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Deborah Serumun Aber, welcomed the delegation and emphasized women’s participation in peace processes, noting progress made through community-based peace committees.

The meeting reinforces Benue State’s commitment to international cooperation for peace, security, and economic development.
