A Benue-based activist, Zege’Orkwande Sughnen, has commended Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia for his administration’s ongoing efforts in combating human trafficking in the state, while calling for enhanced rehabilitation and empowerment programmes for rescued victims.
In a detailed Facebook post, Sughnen highlighted the Governor’s directive that facilitates the free transportation of rescued victims through Benue Links Nig. Ltd as a significant step forward. He expressed appreciation for the administration’s support in addressing the menace of human trafficking.
Sughnen, however, proposed additional measures to ensure the long-term recovery and reintegration of victims. He urged the Governor to designate a dedicated rehabilitation and counseling department at the Benue State Teaching Hospital to cater to the mental health needs of trafficked persons.
Furthermore, he requested that the Benue State Skills Acquisition Center be instructed to offer complimentary training to victims in various vocational skills, including fashion and design, graphics and printing, and other trades. According to him, such skills would empower survivors to become self-sufficient, legally migrate to other states or countries if they choose, or establish their own businesses and contribute meaningfully to society.
“The health, mental well-being, and sustainability of victims are crucial after rescue,” Sughnen emphasised in the post, which was copied to the Benue State Government and Governor Alia.
The intervention comes amid continued efforts by the state government to tackle human trafficking, with stakeholders pushing for more comprehensive support systems beyond initial rescue operations.
