High Level Market in Makurdi Engulfed in Fire, Shop Owners Urged to Secure Goods

A major fire outbreak has engulfed sections of High Level Market, one of Makurdi’s busiest commercial hubs, sending thick plumes of smoke across the metropolis and prompting urgent calls for shop owners to rush to the scene and safeguard their merchandise.

According to eyewitness reports and a public alert shared by community figure Ukan Kurugh on social media, the inferno broke out in the early hours of Tuesday, rapidly spreading through stalls and shops stocked with goods. Shop owners and traders have been advised to proceed to the market immediately to secure their property amid fears of widespread losses.

There are also unconfirmed reports of hoodlums reportedly positioning themselves around the area, allegedly waiting to exploit the chaos and loot vulnerable shops during the confusion. Security personnel, including officers of the Nigeria Police Force, are said to be on ground working to maintain order and prevent criminal exploitation of the situation.

The Regional Manager of the Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC) has been urgently appealed to instruct the control room to disconnect electricity supply to the affected zone as a precautionary measure to prevent further escalation or electrical-related hazards.

Firefighters from the Benue State Fire Service have already deployed two fire trucks to the scene and are making concerted efforts to contain the blaze and bring it under control. Benue State Youth Leader Gbenda Terver and his team are also reported to be present, collaborating with security operatives to protect lives and property while assisting with crowd control.

High Level Market serves as a vital economic artery in Makurdi, attracting traders and buyers from across the state for daily commerce in food items, clothing, electronics, and household goods. The outbreak is likely to cause significant disruption and financial hardship for many small business owners already grappling with economic challenges.
