In a significant development, the Joint Action Congress (JAC) of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) at Moses Orshio Adasu University (formerly Benue State University, Makurdi) has announced an indefinite and total strike action stemming from the government’s failure to address critical welfare issues affecting university staff.
The strike was triggered by the non-implementation of several key measures, including the new national minimum wage, the 25% and 35% wage awards approved by the Federal Government to mitigate the impact of fuel subsidy removal, and the delayed implementation of staff promotions for the years 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024. The unions have vowed to continue the strike until these longstanding issues are fully resolved.
This action underscores the growing frustration among non-academic staff in Nigerian universities over unfulfilled promises and neglected welfare concerns.
