The Nigerian journalism community is in deep mourning following the death of Chief Dan Agebese, one of the most courageous and influential pen professionals the country has ever produced. The sad news was announced today by Comrade Bemdoo Ugber, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Benue State Council, in a heartfelt tribute that has since gone viral across social media platforms.

Chief Agebese was not just a veteran journalist; he was an institution. As former General Manager of Radio Benue, former Director in the Ministry of Information and Orientation, and one of the founding pillars of the iconic NewsWatch Magazine, he spent decades holding power to account with unflinching bravery at a time when speaking truth could cost one everything.

His pen was both sword and shield. He confronted injustice head-on, exposed wrongdoing without fear or favour, and gave voice to the voiceless in a career defined by clarity, conviction, and unshakeable integrity. For many younger journalists in Benue and across Nigeria, Chief Agebese was more than a colleague; he was a father figure, a mentor, and a living example of what it means to practise journalism as a sacred public trust.

In the words of the NUJ Benue State Council, “Benue has lost a legend. Nigeria has lost a statesman of the pen. Journalism has lost one of its finest gladiators.” Yet even in grief, there is celebration of a life extraordinarily well lived; a life of impact, discipline, courage, and excellence.

Though Chief Agebese has laid down his pen, his words will continue to echo, his lessons will continue to shape generations, and his legacy will remain indelible in the annals of Nigerian journalism.

To his family, the Nigeria Union of Journalists extends its deepest condolences. May the Almighty grant them strength and comfort in this difficult time.

Adieu, master of the written word.
Adieu, fearless defender of truth.
Rest in peace, Chief Dan Agebese.

Your light will never dim.
