The Benue State Government has strongly refuted what it describes as “mischievous attempts” to misrepresent the ongoing demolition exercise along the Wurukum-Yaikyor-Apir-Ikpayongo axis in Makurdi, clarifying that the action is part of a broader federal road expansion project.
In a statement issued on November 6, 2025, authorities emphasized that the demolitions are not arbitrary but align with long-planned infrastructure upgrades aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving connectivity in the state capital. The government accused certain individuals of spreading distorted narratives to incite public unrest and undermine the project’s objectives.
Images circulating online show marked structures, including residential and commercial buildings, already reduced to rubble, with heavy machinery actively clearing the corridor. Residents affected by the exercise have expressed mixed reactions, with some acknowledging the need for development while others lament the lack of adequate notice and compensation.
The government urged citizens to disregard misinformation and cooperate with officials to ensure the smooth execution of the project. It also promised that affected property owners would be duly compensated in line with established procedures.
This development comes amid heightened scrutiny of urban renewal efforts in Makurdi, where rapid population growth has put pressure on existing infrastructure. The federal road expansion, once completed, is expected to enhance economic activity and safety along one of the busiest routes in the state.
As the demolition continues, local leaders and community advocates are calling for transparency in the compensation process and timely resettlement plans for displaced families. The Benue State Government has assured the public that the exercise remains on track and serves the greater interest of the people.
