The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Ministry of Livestock Development, has designated five states and the Federal Capital Territory for the pilot implementation of its National Ranching Policy.
Benue is among the states selected for the programme. The designation has drawn reactions from some residents and commentators who have expressed strong reservations about the inclusion of the state.
In a public post, Franc Utoo noted that the designated states are located in the Middle Belt and called on Benue people to reject what he described as an arrangement that could further complicate the security situation in the state. He urged residents to voice clear opposition to Benue’s participation in the pilot scheme.
The Federal Government has previously stated that the ranching policy is intended to reduce open cattle movement and address long-standing farmers-herders conflicts in the selected areas.
