The Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) at Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) held its much-anticipated elections on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, marking the end of the previous executive’s tenure. The peaceful exercise saw Comrade Ioryem Chiangi re-elected as Chairman unopposed, with the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Dr. Terungwa Stephen Hwande, charging the new leadership to prioritize members’ welfare and foster collaboration with management.
Dr. Hwande, receiving the newly elected executives in his office, emphasized that unionism should promote collaboration and mutual respect rather than antagonism. He urged the re-elected Chairman, Comrade Ioryem Chiangi, to continue advocating for the people and justify the trust placed in him by members. The CMD also encouraged staff to adopt a positive work attitude, reinforcing the hospital’s zero-tolerance policy for indiscipline while highlighting teamwork and cooperation as key drivers for improving healthcare delivery and achieving the hospital’s mission of excellence.
The election results saw Comrade Ioryem Chiangi return as Chairman, with Injoalu Hembadoon as Vice Chairman, Orshi Ben as Secretary General, Isho Thaddeus as Treasurer, Cornelius Emmanuel Abah as Auditor, and Dorothy Adzer as Public Relations Officer. Three positions were contested, while the remaining were filled unopposed, reflecting a smooth transition.
In his acceptance speech, Comrade Chiangi dedicated his re-election to God and promised continued collaboration with management to enhance members’ welfare. He assured workers of his commitment to better working conditions and improved benefits for all hospital staff.
The election was supervised by the National President of MHWUN, Comrade Kabiru Mijinbi, represented by Comrade Adebayo Davidson. Davidson commended the peaceful conduct of members and urged them to remain disciplined and united for progress. The newly inaugurated executive, expected to serve a three-year term, pledged to work hand in hand with management to tackle healthcare workers’ challenges and strengthen the hospital’s service delivery for the benefit of all.
This election underscores BSUTH’s commitment to effective leadership and staff welfare, setting the stage for continued growth in healthcare services at the institution.
