In a recent statement from Terver Zamber, the Media Aide to the Former Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aondona Dajoh, has refuted allegations suggesting he intended to impeach Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia. The controversy, which has stirred political circles in Benue State, centers around claims that the former Speaker initiated moves against the governor. However, a press release issued by Terver Zamber, Media Aide to the Former Speaker, on August 26, 2025, categorically denies these accusations.

“These allegations are false, misleading, and appear designed to tarnish the reputation of the former Speaker,” the statement reads. It further highlights that Rt. Hon. Aondona Dajoh, who holds the record as the longest-serving Speaker in the Assembly’s history, maintained a “cordial and constructive relationship” with the Governor.

The statement also notes a significant event just before the former Speaker’s resignation: “In fact, just days before his resignation, the House under his leadership passed a vote of confidence in the Governor, reaffirming the Assembly’s commitment to supporting the Government’s efforts to succeed.”

The controversy escalated with the suspension of the former Speaker, a move initiated by Hon. Terna Shimauwa, representing Kyan State Constituency. The press release questions the motives behind this action, asking, “A pertinent question remains: who were the others the former Speaker allegedly planned to impeach the governor with, and why is the former Speaker the only one facing suspension?”

“It is unfortunate that Hon. Terna Shimauwa, representing Kyan State Constituency who moved the motion for the suspension of the former Speaker on the grounds of an alleged impeachment plot, was speaking in the house for the very first time since his election to the tenth Assembly,” the statement continues, suggesting the suspension may be politically motivated. It describes the three-month suspension as “a mere political maneuver, orchestrated by non-state actors and executed by elements within the tenth Assembly.”

Despite accepting the suspension in good faith, the former Speaker’s team emphasizes his resignation was for the sake of peace and the state’s best interest. “It’s unnecessary to spread falsehoods against the former Speaker, who resigned for the sake of peace and in the best interest of the state,” the release adds.

The statement concludes with a call to the public: “We therefore urge the public to disregard these unfounded claims and continue to support the progress of Benue State.”

As the political landscape in Benue State continues to evolve, this development raises questions about internal Assembly dynamics and the credibility of the allegations. The former Speaker’s denial and the timing of his resignation suggest a complex interplay of power and strategy within the state’s governance structure.
