In a remarkable display of intellectual prowess, Ihauh Msuurshater, a nursing undergraduate from Fr. Adasu University, Makurdi (FAUM), emerged as the winner of the Dr. Terungwa Stephen Hwande Essay Writing Competition. The event, held at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) on Monday, drew participants from FAUM and Joseph Saawuan Tarka University, Makurdi (JOSTUM), showcasing the region’s burgeoning talent pool.
The competition, coordinated by Dr. Samuel Otene, featured a keenly contested session with 12 participants. Msuurshater clinched first place with an impressive score of 50 points, earning a prize of Five Hundred Thousand Naira. George Eric Terue and Iornav S. Kumawuese secured second and third positions, receiving Three Hundred Thousand Naira and Two Hundred Thousand Naira respectively. The remaining nine contestants were each awarded Fifty Thousand Naira as consolation prizes, a gesture warmly received by participants and guests alike.
Mr. Bito Aondoyima, coordinator of indoor and outdoor activities, highlighted the competition’s goal of supporting tertiary students across Benue State. He emphasized its focus on discovering intellectual talents while fostering a culture of critical thinking and research among youths. The essay challenge included two impromptu topics: “Exploring Medical Tourism Potential at BSUTH: Prospects and Challenges” and “How Can BSUTH Become a Destination for Medical Tourism?” Contestants demonstrated creativity, analytical skills, and a deep understanding of the issues at hand.
The event concluded with commendations for Dr. Stephen Hwande, the competition’s sponsor, for his commitment to youth empowerment. Stakeholders urged the continuity of the program to further sharpen intellectual capacity, inspire innovation, and strengthen academic excellence among Benue students.
The Chief Medical Director of BSUTH praised the initiative, linking it to Governor Hyacinth Alia’s strides in education. He cited milestones such as the establishment of the University of Agriculture, Science and Technology, Ihugh, teacher recruitment, and primary school infrastructure development. Dr. Otene urged winners to use their prizes judiciously, marking the event as a significant step forward in nurturing the next generation of thinkers and leaders in the region.
