At 60, Gov Alia Reaffirms Commitment to Benue’s Growth, Seeks Responsible Journalism

Governor of Benue State, Reverend Father Dr. Hyacinth Alia, has reiterated his administration’s resolve to continue delivering people-oriented governance and sustainable development across the state.

The governor, represented by his Deputy, Dr. Sam Ode Mni, made the remarks during a symposium organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Benue State Council, on Thursday, May 14, 2026, at the Fr. Alia Ultra-Modern Conference Hall, Benue State Emergency Management Agency Headquarters in Makurdi.

The event formed part of activities marking the governor’s 60th birthday anniversary.

In presentations at the symposium, speakers highlighted Governor Alia’s journey from the Catholic priesthood into politics and governance. Prof. Fr. Vitalis Towel described Catholic priests as fundamentally public servants committed to accountability, transparency, and service to humanity. Chief Solomon Iorpev, Technical Adviser to the Governor on Media, Publicity and Strategic Communication, presented an abridged profile of the governor’s educational and professional background.

Deputy Governor Dr. Sam Ode Mni described Governor Alia as a prudent and transparent leader who treats public resources with integrity. He praised the cordial working relationship between the governor and his deputy, noting the atmosphere of teamwork and mutual respect.

Comrade Bemdoo Ugber, Chairman of the NUJ Benue State Council, described Governor Alia as a transformational leader whose developmental strides in less than three years in office have surpassed achievements of previous administrations. The NUJ, he said, passed a vote of confidence on the governor’s administration and appealed to him to sustain the current pace of development.

Ugber also appealed for urgent intervention in the renovation of the NUJ State Secretariat and support to offset over ₦15 million in liabilities.

Deborah Aber, Secretary to the Benue State Government and Chairman of the occasion, described Governor Alia as an inspiring and visionary leader whose life of service continues to instill hope among the people of Benue State.

Governor Alia assured citizens of his continued commitment to improving their welfare despite prevailing challenges, while calling on journalists to uphold constructive, fact-based, and responsible journalism for the progress of democracy and society.
