Benue State Governor, His Excellency Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has conducted an on-site inspection of a cleared location in Ihugh, Vandeikya Local Government Area, designated for the construction of a multipurpose water dam.
The project aims to provide consistent and reliable water for domestic use, industrial purposes, and agricultural irrigation, addressing long-standing challenges faced by residents and farmers who have depended heavily on unpredictable rainfall.
During the visit, Governor Alia emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating that for too long, the people and farmers of Benue State have relied solely on erratic rains, leaving many communities without steady access to clean, potable water. He described the dam project as a monument to his administration’s commitment to a better future for the state.
The Governor further highlighted that upon completion, the dam will deliver vital irrigation capabilities. This is expected to facilitate a shift from subsistence farming to year-round commercial agriculture, significantly boosting food security, generating thousands of jobs for the state’s youth, supporting local industrial growth, and enhancing agro-allied businesses while improving the overall quality of life for residents.
The Chairman of Vandeikya LGA, Hon. Dennis Guda Terkura, commended Governor Alia for bringing this impactful project to the area and urged the community to cooperate fully with contractors to ensure timely completion.
Governor Alia was accompanied on the inspection by several officials, including the Deputy Chairman of Vandeikya LGA, Mrs. Janet Orukuna; the Director General of ACREeSAL, Engr. Victor Ama; the CEO of ASPAM Nigerian Limited; Dr. Solomon Akperekpe; the APC Party Chairman of Vandeikya LGA, Hon. Felix Ukange; and the Chairman of the Vandeikya Elders Forum, Hon. Iorpuu Baaki, among others.
The development is seen as a significant step toward sustainable water resource management and agricultural transformation in Benue State.
