Nigerian international footballer Francisca Mlumun Ordega has donated a functional borehole to her home community in Mbatiav, Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State, bringing much-needed relief to residents who have long struggled with access to clean water.
The Super Falcons forward, who currently plays for Al-Ittihad in the Saudi Women’s Premier League, shared the news on her Facebook page while marking Mother’s Day. In the post, Ordega explained that water scarcity has been a major challenge in the Mbatiav region for years. As a proud daughter of the community, she decided to step in and provide a practical solution with the borehole project.
“I have donated a borehole to my community in Mbatiav, Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State,” she wrote. “If you’re familiar with this community, access to water has been a significant challenge in the Mbatiav region, and as a daughter I stepped in. Gold I do not have nor silver but the little I have I make sure it gets to the right places. God bless my heart and happy Mother’s Day to me and to all the wonderful mothers out there.”
The Facebook post included photos showing heavy drilling machinery on site and the newly installed handpump borehole, with two young children from the community standing proudly beside it in the rural setting.
Born on October 19, 1993, in Gboko, Benue State, Francisca Ordega has risen to become one of Nigeria’s most recognizable female football talents. Nicknamed the “African Dribble Queen,” she has represented the Super Falcons at multiple FIFA Women’s World Cups and African Women’s Championships, helping the team secure several continental titles. She was honoured with the national award of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) for her contributions to sports and national development.
This latest act of generosity adds to Ordega’s growing record of giving back to her roots through the Francisca Ordega Foundation. She has previously supported education initiatives in Gboko, including book donations to local schools, and continues to inspire many young girls in Benue State and beyond.
In many rural parts of Benue, reliable access to clean water remains a daily struggle, often affecting health, education, and productivity. Projects like Ordega’s borehole provide immediate and lasting benefits to the community.
Her gesture has been warmly received by locals and supporters, who see it as a shining example of a successful athlete remembering her beginnings and using her platform to make a tangible difference.
As Francisca Ordega continues to shine on the football pitch, her commitment to community development serves as a powerful reminder that true success extends far beyond personal achievements.
