Speaker Emberga Commends Benue Youths at Grand Finale of Maiden Benue Baka Carnival

The Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Berger Alfred Emberga, has commended young people across the state for their steadfast support of Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia’s administration, urging them to remain committed as the government advances its development agenda.

The Speaker made the remarks on Sunday during the grand finale of the maiden Benue Baka Carnival, a week-long cultural festival held from February 23 to March 1, 2026, at the Governor Alia Youth House in the High Level area of Makurdi. The event drew youths, cultural troupes, entertainers, political figures, and community leaders from across the state, featuring cultural dance competitions, musical performances, award presentations, and vibrant displays of Benue heritage.

Addressing participants, Emberga described Benue youths as critical stakeholders in the state’s progress. He praised their resilience, unity, and active involvement in governance and civic activities, noting that their participation remains essential to sustaining development.

The Speaker highlighted key infrastructure projects under the current administration, including the rehabilitation and construction of township roads in Makurdi and other parts of the state. He explained that these efforts form part of a broader urban renewal programme aimed at improving mobility and stimulating economic activity. He also emphasised rural road construction and community-based projects designed to link farming communities to markets, boost agricultural productivity, and drive overall economic growth.

On youth inclusion, Emberga noted that the present administration has appointed young people into key positions and recently recruited teachers through the State Universal Basic Education Board, creating employment opportunities for graduates.

The initiator of the carnival, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth Organisation and Illegal Levies, Terver Gbenda Gbenda, said the event was conceived to promote peace, creativity, and unity among youths. He reaffirmed their commitment to supporting government programmes and initiatives.

The carnival provided a platform for young people to showcase talents, promote cultural heritage, and strengthen unity across communities, drawing widespread praise for its role in fostering social cohesion and celebrating Benue identity.
