A young woman from Mbaajii in Kunav, Vandeikya Local Government Area of Benue State, has publicly appealed to the Tor Tiv and the Tiv Traditional Council for urgent intervention after her family reportedly demanded a marriage list exceeding N2 million from her prospective husband.
The woman, whose identity is being protected in reports, described the exorbitant demands as the sole obstacle preventing her marriage. She explained that despite repeated appeals to her family to comply with the Tiv Traditional Council’s 2025 directive—which capped marriage lists at no more than N1,000—her relatives have rejected all attempts at moderation. According to her account, the family insists that every item on their original extensive list must be provided in full before she can be released for marriage.
“The marriage list my family issued is stopping me from getting married. I am pleading with the Tor Tiv and the Tiv Traditional Council to come to my aid,” she said in an emotional statement shared widely on social media.
The case has ignited widespread public concern and debate across Tiv communities, particularly in Vandeikya, where residents are questioning how some families continue to impose marriage lists valued in the millions of naira, years after the royal directive was issued to eliminate excessive bride price and related demands.
The 2025 resolution, signed by the Tor Tiv himself, was intended to protect young couples from financial hardship, reduce the economic barriers to marriage, and preserve cultural dignity while discouraging practices that burden suitors and delay unions. Observers argue that the persistence of such high demands points to weak enforcement of the reform and calls for stronger reaffirmation of the traditional authority’s position.

Many have expressed sympathy for the woman, viewing her public cry for help as a symptom of a larger challenge facing prospective couples who wish to marry under culturally acceptable but financially realistic terms.
