A devastating rainstorm accompanied by strong winds has caused extensive damage in the Channel 2 settlement area of Ukum Local Government Area, destroying several residential houses, churches, schools and public structures worth millions of naira.
The downpour began at approximately 6:35 am on Wednesday and lasted for about an hour, leaving residents in mourning and grappling with fresh hardships.
Among the structures completely destroyed or severely damaged are the Ukum Local Government guest house meeting hall, Hanank College, NKST Church Use, Roman Catholic Church Use, Hon. Ukor’s perimeter fence, Ezekiel Sevav’s residence, a house belonging to Bishop Igbudu, and Terna Kpelai’s house, along with several other buildings in the same area.
Reports indicate that some of the destroyed houses belong to internally displaced persons currently seeking refuge in the community. Residents, including Mr. James Tor, Manasseh Agwaza, Paul Akera and Emmanuel Chukwu, expressed deep dismay over their losses and appealed for assistance from benevolent individuals, citing their limited financial resources amid the ongoing crisis in the Sankera axis.
The rainstorm did not affect Zaki Biam town, which is located a few kilometres away from the Channel 2 settlement area. No official statement has yet been issued by the Ukum Local Government Council or the Benue State Emergency Management Agency on the extent of the damage or plans for immediate relief.
