Public reactions have continued to mount following the death of teenager Atser Sesugh in Makurdi, with many residents and activists questioning the official police narrative and demanding an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Benue State Police Command had earlier issued a press release stating that Sesugh, who was wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged fraud and cybercrime, was shot dead during a raid on a hideout behind Mechanic Village in Kanshio, Makurdi on May 23, 2026. According to the police, EFCC operatives came under attack by suspected cultists, and Sesugh was found in a pool of blood during the exchange of gunfire. He was confirmed dead at Police Cottage Hospital and his body deposited at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital mortuary.
