President Tinubu Extends Solidarity to Tiv People on Tiv Day, Reaffirms Commitment to Unity and Cultural Preservation

On December 14, 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu extended warm greetings to the Tiv people of Benue State as they celebrated the annual Tiv Day, emphasizing the federal government’s dedication to national unity, inclusiveness, and the safeguarding of Nigeria’s diverse cultural heritage. The event, held in Gboko under the theme “The Rebirth of the Tiv Nation,” marked a significant moment of cultural revival after years of postponement due to insecurity.

Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, President Tinubu highlighted culture as a profound force that fosters identity and a sense of belonging among communities. He commended the Tiv nation’s rich traditions, values, and communal spirit, noting their contributions to Nigeria’s cultural diversity and peaceful coexistence since the celebration’s inception in 1977. The President urged Tiv and Benue leaders to prioritize unity and collaboration for the region’s peace and development, while restating the Renewed Hope Agenda’s focus on economic transformation, security, infrastructure, and good governance.

The Tor Tiv, His Royal Majesty Professor James Ortese Iorzua Ayatse, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his representation and ongoing security interventions in Benue, including responses to recent attacks. He praised Governor Hyacinth Alia for reviving the event and providing support, calling for healing from social and political divisions. The celebration featured the conferment of chieftaincy titles on prominent figures, including Governor Alia (Asôrtar-u-Tiv), APC National Chairman Professor Nentawe Yilwatda (Zegebar-u-Tiv), and others, alongside the launch of the Tiv-English Dictionary to preserve the language.

Despite underlying political tensions in the state, the day served as a platform for reflection on Tiv heritage and renewed calls for harmony. As the Tiv nation looks toward rebirth and progress, President Tinubu’s message reinforced the importance of preserving traditions for future generations, positioning cultural identity as a cornerstone of national strength and cohesion.
