In a dramatic turn of events that could easily pass for a movie script, police operatives in Benue State have successfully rescued a female nursing student who was abducted at gunpoint in the Agbungun community, Logo Local Government Area. The rescue operation, which unfolded in the early hours of November 24, 2025, ended with a suspected gang leader dead and another suspect in custody following a intense exchange of gunfire.

The ordeal began on the night of November 21 when six armed men riding on three motorcycles stormed Agbungun and snatched the young student in broad daylight. The kidnappers fled toward Biki community, triggering an immediate response from the Divisional Police Officer of Ayilamo, who mobilized patrol teams and tactical units for a hot pursuit.

What followed was a high-stakes chase that culminated in a fierce gun battle at the criminals’ hideout. Amid the chaos, the abducted student displayed remarkable courage, seizing a split-second opportunity to break free and escape unharmed. She has since been safely reunited with her relieved family.

The suspected ringleader, identified as Avalumun Nyamver, popularly known as “Ornu,” was hit by bullets during the shootout and later pronounced dead at the hospital. Police sources described him as a notorious gang leader terrorizing the area. Also arrested at the scene was a woman, Mngusuun Torkende from Ucha in Ukum LGA, who claimed she had traveled to the area for a burial and decided to stay behind on the instructions of the now-deceased suspect.

Officers recovered a haul of incriminating items from the hideout, including a mobile phone, criminal charms, bags, a cutlass, two power banks, and four SIM cards. The State Criminal Investigation Department has launched a full-scale investigation while manhunt continues for the remaining fleeing members of the gang.

This successful rescue comes as a major boost for security agencies in Benue State and a testament to swift response and coordination. For the brave nursing student, it is nothing short of a second chance at life, and for the community, a clear message that criminal elements will not have the final say.
