NAF Helicopter Makes Safe Emergency Landing on Farmland in Makurdi

A major tragedy was narrowly averted in Makurdi, Benue State, after a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) helicopter executed a safe emergency landing on a local farmland following what eyewitnesses described as a technical fault.

According to reports from the scene around Utur Tse-Igboji in the Bar Council Ward, the aircraft was forced down along the Welfare Quarters–Mopol 13 Ring Road corridor. Community members quickly rushed to the area and rallied to support the officers on board. All crew members emerged alive and unhurt from the landing.

The incident has drawn public attention amid heightened sensitivity surrounding recent military aviation mishaps across the country. Initial accounts from residents, including one eyewitness who reported from the scene, indicated that the helicopter landed on farmland after developing a technical issue mid-flight, with locals assisting the personnel until military security arrived to secure the location.

In a subsequent official statement, the Nigerian Air Force clarified that the helicopter had been involved in an air operation providing close air support against suspected kidnappers in the Ogbadigbo area of Benue State, near the Enugu–Benue boundary. According to the NAF, after the successful completion of the mission, the pilot exercised professional discretion to carry out a precautionary landing approximately 10 nautical miles from the airfield while returning to base, in line with established operational and safety procedures following combat missions. The Air Force confirmed that the helicopter has since returned to base.

The safe outcome of the landing has been welcomed by residents who witnessed the event, as it prevented what could have been a far more serious incident.
