In a dramatic turn of events on the streets of Makurdi, the capital of Benue State, angry youths have taken a stand against what they describe as the unauthorized removal of newly installed streetlights. The confrontation, captured in viral photos and videos circulating on social media, shows residents physically blocking agents allegedly sent by Hon. Dickson Tarkighir, a prominent political figure in the area, from carting away the lighting infrastructure.

The incident reportedly unfolded in broad daylight, with youths forming human barricades around trucks loaded with dismantled streetlight poles. Some were seen lying on the ground to prevent the vehicles from moving, while others confronted the workers, demanding answers as to why public infrastructure was being removed without consultation or official notice.

According to eyewitness accounts shared online, the streetlights had only recently been installed as part of efforts to improve security and visibility in the community. Their sudden removal sparked immediate outrage, with residents accusing political interests of undermining public welfare for personal or partisan gain.

“These streetlights were installed for the safety of the people,” one protester was quoted as saying in a widely shared video. “How can someone just come and start packing them like they belong to him? We voted for development, not this kind of behavior.”

The protest has reignited conversations about accountability in local governance and the use of public resources. Many are questioning the motive behind the removal—whether it was due to contractual disputes, political sabotage, or misappropriation of materials meant for community development.

Hon. Dickson Tarkighir, a former member of the Benue State House of Assembly and a known political actor in the region, has yet to issue an official statement addressing the allegations. His silence has only fueled speculation and anger among constituents who feel betrayed by the actions of individuals linked to his office.

Social media platforms, particularly Facebook, have become a battleground for public opinion, with the post by Alia TV Network garnering over 168 reactions and 76 comments within hours. Many users expressed solidarity with the youths, praising their courage in defending community assets.

This incident comes at a time when Benue State, like many parts of Nigeria, is grappling with infrastructure deficits and security challenges. Functional street lighting is seen not just as a convenience but as a critical tool in combating crime, especially in urban and semi-urban areas where nighttime visibility is poor.

Local civil society groups have called for an immediate investigation by relevant authorities, including the Benue State Government and anti-corruption agencies, to ascertain the ownership of the streetlights, the legitimacy of their installation, and the justification—if any—for their removal.

As the standoff continues, residents remain vigilant, vowing not to allow the streetlights to be taken away without a transparent explanation. “We are not against any individual,” a youth leader reportedly said during the protest. “We are for the truth and for the progress of Makurdi.”

The people of Makurdi await answers. For now, the streetlights remain grounded—literally and figuratively—at the center of a growing demand for accountability, transparency, and respect for public trust.
