Benue State has officially commenced celebrations marking its Golden Jubilee, commemorating 50 years since its creation as the Food Basket of the Nation. Under the leadership of Governor Hyacinth Alia, a series of commemorative activities are being held to reflect on the state’s rich cultural heritage, resilience, and progress.
The week-long celebration will culminate in a grand finale this weekend at the iconic IBB Square in Makurdi, featuring colourful cultural displays, ceremonial parades, and reflections on the state’s journey. The festivities will continue on Sunday, June 28, 2026, combining the Golden Jubilee with the celebration of Governor Alia’s third anniversary in office and his 60th birthday.
An Interdenominational Thanksgiving Service is scheduled to hold at IBB Square, Makurdi, commencing at 9:00 a.m. Members of the public are warmly invited to participate in these historic events as the state looks back on five decades of achievements and forward to a brighter future.
Since assuming office, Governor Alia has focused on the Benue First agenda, emphasising infrastructural development, civil service reforms, economic revitalisation, and human capital development.
