The Executive Governor of Benue State, His Excellency Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has successfully overseen a transformative free medical outreach for the residents of Shangev-Ya in Kwande Local Government Area. Represented by Hon. Stephen Aondona Uta, the Executive Secretary of the Bureau for Mines and Solid Minerals, this initiative aimed to alleviate the financial burden of hospital bills amid challenging economic times.
Hon. Uta addressed the community, highlighting Governor Alia’s mission to transform Benue State and set it on a path of sustainable development. He urged residents to continue supporting and praying for the administration as it pursues these goals. Governor Alia reaffirmed his commitment to sustaining such outreach efforts, announcing that additional programs are in the pipeline to benefit the community in the near future. He also expressed gratitude to the medical team for their hard work and professionalism throughout the outreach.
The medical outreach, which ran from August 25 to August 28 under the leadership of Dr. Thaddeus Aende, yielded remarkable results. According to the medical team’s report:
- 5,000 patients were consulted and treated for various medical conditions.
- 246 surgeries were performed.
- 450 pairs of reading glasses were distributed.
- 100 patients received ear syringing and other care.
- 906 women were screened for Human Papillomavirus (cervical cancer screening), with 600 receiving vaccinations.
- 570 individuals were screened for Hepatitis B, and 400 were vaccinated.
- Additionally, 91 referrals were made to tertiary health facilities, with Governor Alia promising to cover the related bills.
This outreach underscores Governor Alia’s dedication to enhancing the health and well-being of Benue State citizens. The initiative not only provided immediate relief but also strengthened the bond between the government and the people, with a clear promise of continued support.
