Fire Razes Five Houses Behind Divine Mercy Secondary School in Zaki-Biam

A devastating fire outbreak on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, completely destroyed no fewer than five residential houses located behind Divine Mercy Secondary School in Zaki-Biam, Benue State.

The blaze, which started in the early hours of the day, spread with alarming speed, engulfing the affected buildings within minutes and reducing household belongings, personal effects, and other valuables—estimated to be worth millions of naira—to ashes.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and panic as residents scrambled to escape the rapidly advancing flames, with little to no chance of salvaging any of their possessions. Many watched helplessly as their homes and life savings went up in smoke.

Fortunately, no lives were reported lost or serious injuries sustained in the incident. However, the cause of the fire remained unknown as of the time of this report, with investigations yet to determine whether it resulted from an electrical fault, negligence, open flame, or any other factor.

Local leaders have called for prompt intervention to provide temporary shelter, food, clothing, and other essential relief materials to those affected while longer-term solutions are explored.
