Fear Grips Dyom Community as Herdsmen and Armed Group Tighten Control in Ukum LGA

Residents of a farming settlement near Dyom in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State are living in fear following reports that Fulani herdsmen and a group led by Oraernyi Anyogo have taken over farmlands and residential areas. The escalating situation has left the community on edge as insecurity continues to mount.

Eyewitnesses allege that the herdsmen often set up camps behind residential houses, retreating into nearby farms whenever soldiers or members of the local security outfit, Anyam Nyor, are sighted. This tactical movement has heightened tensions among residents, who feel increasingly vulnerable.

A resident, recounting their ordeal, shared, “Our house is close to Dyom, and whenever the Fulani hear that soldiers or Anyam Nyor are around, they quickly leave our compound and hide in our farms. Oraernyi Anyogo and his boys are everywhere. We can’t eat, farm, or even move freely around our home. What kind of wickedness is this?” The resident added that most community members are too frightened to speak up, fearing retaliation from the armed men or herdsmen. Many families, they said, now live in silent suffering as insecurity continues to escalate in the area.
