Family of Six Found Unconscious, One Confirmed Dead Gboko Local Government

A shocking incident has left the Akaajime community in Mbakpegh, Iapav, Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State reeling in confusion and grief. On Tuesday, September 23, 2025, a family of six was discovered unconscious in their one-room apartment, with one member tragically confirmed dead.

The tragedy claimed the life of four-year-old Master Sunday Surnen, while the remaining five victims—Mde Joseph (the mother), Terkuma Mdewaues (12), Chiviter Avalumun (10), Teryange Avalumun (7), and Aondohemba Joseph (11)—were rushed to a private hospital in Akaajime for urgent medical attention. According to reports from World Link Newspaper, medical personnel are working tirelessly to revive the victims, with the attending doctor noting a 95% success rate so far.

The harrowing ordeal began when 11-year-old Aondohemba Joseph woke up as usual to prepare for school but found himself unable to move from his bed. He called out to his mother, who did not respond, only to discover the entire family unconscious. His sister eventually raised the alarm, prompting neighbors to rush to their aid. Aondohemba also revealed that their mother had woken up at 2 a.m. to cook but returned to bed after realizing it was still midnight, intending to resume later—a decision that preceded the tragic event.

Adding to the mystery, a family member who escaped the tragedy, Miss Mohivinzhe Terkura, recounted a disturbing detail. Returning home around 10 a.m. after spending the night at her aunt’s house due to heavy rainfall, she found the door locked from the inside—an unusual occurrence. After forcing it open, she discovered her mother and siblings unconscious and immediately sought help. Terkura also noted a strange chemical smell in the room, despite the family not using a gas cooker or insecticides, relying instead on mosquito nets.

The cause of the incident remains unknown, and authorities have yet to issue an official statement. The attending doctor, whose name was withheld, told World Link that his immediate focus is on reviving the victims, while investigations continue into this mysterious tragedy. The community remains in shock as concerned relatives and neighbors gather at the hospital, awaiting further updates.
