History was made on Monday at Dyom Market in Mbatian Ngyenev, Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, as commercial activities resumed nearly one year after the market was completely destroyed during violent attacks.
The once-vibrant market had been burnt down by suspected herdsmen, leaving it deserted as terrified residents fled their ancestral homes. For many months, the community grappled with displacement, fear, and deep uncertainty, with some believing they would never return.
The successful reopening has therefore become a powerful turning point, marking the restoration of peace and the gradual return to normal life for the people of Dyom. Residents described the event as far more than a revival of trading activities, calling it a profound symbol of hope, resilience, and renewal. Families previously scattered by the crisis are now regaining confidence to rebuild their lives and reconnect with their roots.
The Chairman of Ukum Local Government Area, Hon. Jonathan Modi, received widespread commendation for his leadership and sustained commitment to peace-building efforts that paved the way for this milestone. Community members said his dedication brought relief, joy, and renewed trust in grassroots governance.
They expressed strong optimism that the hard-won peace in Dyom Market will endure and spread across the entire Ukum Local Government Area and Benue State as a whole. As traders set up stalls and buyers returned, the atmosphere was filled with cautious celebration and prayers for lasting stability in the region.
