Tensions between the Odoba and Epaigbo communities in Ogbadibo Local Government Area of Benue State escalated into violent clashes yesterday, resulting in one death and the destruction of several properties.
According to residents and eyewitness accounts, the crisis began when an Odoba vigilante allegedly shot and killed a youth from Epaigbo over a ₦9,000 debt. The fatal shooting triggered outrage among Epaigbo youths, who retaliated against members of the Odoba community, leading to widespread confrontations.
Eyewitnesses described how the situation quickly spiraled out of control, with buildings set ablaze and people fleeing for safety. “Buildings were set on fire, and people ran for their lives,” one local resident recounted, speaking anonymously due to fear of reprisals. Several others sustained injuries during the chaos that engulfed the two neighboring communities.
Community leaders have appealed for calm and restraint, urging youths from both sides to exercise patience while security agencies handle the matter. A traditional ruler from Ogbadibo called on residents to allow law enforcement to intervene and restore peace, emphasizing the need to avoid further escalation.
Authorities have been urged to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure those responsible are held accountable. Security agencies are expected to step in to prevent additional violence and bring the situation under control.
The clash highlights persistent communal tensions in the area and underscores the urgent need for dialogue, conflict resolution mechanisms, and proactive measures to address grievances before they degenerate into violence.
No official statement has been released by the Benue State Police Command or the local government at the time of this report, but investigations are anticipated to commence soon. Residents continue to call for swift action to restore normalcy and prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
