Benue Uncovers N139.8 Billion Financial Gap in Ortom-Era Accounts as Alia Receives Probe Report

The Benue State Government has received the final report of the Commission of Inquiry into the state’s income and expenditure profile between 2015 and 2023, revealing an unexplained financial gap of approximately N139.8 billion.

The Commission, chaired by Hon. Justice Jubril Idrisu (Rtd), was inaugurated by Governor Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia in June 2025 to scrutinize financial activities under the administration of former Governor Samuel Ortom and the 23 local government councils during the period under review.

Presenting the two-volume report at the Government House in Makurdi on Friday, Justice Idrisu disclosed that the state generated over N826.5 billion in revenue while total expenditure stood at approximately N683.4 billion. The panel also uncovered questionable loan transactions and transfers of public funds without adequate documentation.

Receiving the report on behalf of Governor Alia, Deputy Governor Dr. Sam Ode described the Commission’s work as a major milestone in promoting transparency, accountability, and fiscal discipline. He conveyed the Governor’s appreciation to the panel members for their courageous and painstaking assignment.

Dr. Ode assured that the recommendations would be carefully studied and implemented where necessary, stressing the administration’s commitment to blocking financial leakages, strengthening institutions, and improving service delivery.

The Deputy Governor noted that the present administration inherited deep-rooted institutional challenges but remains resolute in confronting them to rebuild public confidence and reposition the state for sustainable development.
