Benue State Poised to Launch Climate Change Policy, Strengthens Environmental Leadership

Benue State is on the verge of a significant milestone with the impending launch of its Climate Change Policy, establishing a robust legal foundation for environmental protection and climate governance. This development was highlighted during the official unveiling of the 2025 Subnational Climate Governance Performance Ranking in Abuja on October 14, 2025.

Represented by the Honourable Commissioner, Hon. Odoh Ugwu, accompanied by the Director of Climate Change, Benue State showcased its active participation in national climate dialogues. The state’s presence at the ranking event reaffirmed its commitment to national and global efforts toward sustainable climate action and environmental protection. Benue’s impressive rise from 27th to 8th in the 2025 ranking, as per the Society for Planet and Prosperity’s report in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Environment, the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), and international development partners, underscores this dedication.

The new ranking reflects the state government’s renewed vision for a cleaner, greener, and more resilient Benue, driven by the shared commitment of all stakeholders under Governor Alia’s administration. Hon. Odoh Ugwu reaffirmed the Ministry’s resolve to consolidate these gains, promoting environmental protection, water resource development, and climate action across the state.

Additionally, the report highlights strategic reforms led by Hon. Ugwu, including proactive engagement with local, national, and international partners, policy alignment with the Federal Ministry of Environment, and institutional restructuring within the ministry. Under Governor Alia’s leadership, Benue has taken bold steps to strengthen institutional frameworks for climate governance, promote collaboration with government agencies, local communities, and international partners, and drive climate action through programs like ACReSAL, SPIN, and SURVWASH. Efforts also include building local resilience through flood control, afforestation, and climate-smart agricultural initiatives.

This progress aligns with the state’s Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Policy, already signed into law, further solidifying Benue’s leadership in environmental sustainability and climate resilience.
