Benue State Honors Late Chief Ogbeh with State Funeral

The late Chief Innocent Audu Ogbeh, OFR, a revered elder statesman and distinguished son of Benue State, was laid to rest in a solemn funeral ceremony at his ancestral home in Efugo, Otukpa, Ogbadibo Local Government Area on September 26, 2025. The service, held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Otukpa, drew prominent dignitaries, political leaders, friends, family, and community members to pay their final respects.

During the funeral service, Most Rev. Michael Apochi, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Otukpo, reflected on the eternal destiny of souls, stating that “the souls of the just shall find a home in eternity.” He emphasized Christ’s desire for all humanity to spend eternity with Him in heaven. Bishop Apochi described the late Chief Ogbeh as a devout Catholic and compassionate individual who dedicated himself wholeheartedly to serving humanity, urging the congregation to prioritize their relationships with others and embody faith and compassion daily.

The funeral was attended by prominent figures, including Governor Hyacinth Alia, who was represented by his deputy, His Excellency, Barr. Dr. Sam Ode. In a heartfelt funeral oration, Governor Alia delivered an eloquent tribute, highlighting Chief Ogbeh’s brilliant career and enduring legacy. He noted, “Chief Audu Ogbeh was more than a politician; he was a patriot, a visionary, and a true son of Benue. His life was a testament to service, integrity, and dedication to Nigeria’s progress.”

Governor Alia highlighted Ogbeh’s contributions from his early days in the Benue State House of Assembly to his national roles as Minister of Communications, Minister of Agriculture, and Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, where he consistently demonstrated leadership rooted in fairness, clarity, and commitment to the common good. The governor praised Ogbeh’s passion for rural development, which he practiced firsthand as a farmer-leader, and called on the federal government to honor his memory with posthumous recognitions. Benue State Government is already taking steps to honor the late sage.

“As we lay him to rest today, let us remember that Chief Ogbeh’s life was dedicated to Nigeria’s unity, progress, and the empowerment of our rural communities,” Governor Alia stressed, adding that “his legacy must inspire future generations to pursue excellence in public service, agriculture, and nation-building.”

The ceremony underscored Chief Ogbeh’s significant impact, leaving a lasting legacy for Benue and Nigeria.
