Political tensions in Benue State escalated today as the leadership structure of the Benue South Senatorial District, known as Zone C, publicly distanced itself from Senate Minority Leader Senator Abba Moro. In a bold move, the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) body for the nine local government areas of Zone C held a press conference at Top Rank Hotel in Abuja, delivering a scathing rebuke of Senator Moro’s performance and a firm endorsement of Governor Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia’s administration.

The event culminated in an extraordinary unanimous passage of a Vote of No Confidence on Senator Moro by the grassroots leaders of his own constituency. Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Hon. (Amb) James Melvin Ejeh, Chairman of Agatu LGA and Deputy ALGON Chairman, dismantled Moro’s recent claims of neglect, labeling the criticism as a self-serving attempt to deflect attention from his own legislative failures. Ejeh described Moro’s sustained barrage of criticism against the governor as a desperate, cynical maneuver to gain relevance and lend false credibility to his decades-long failure in representing Benue South effectively.

The ALGON body shifted focus to Governor Alia’s verifiable progress, using the Senator’s backyard as a benchmark for mandate fulfillment. Highlights included the establishment of a fully operational Benue State University Teaching Hospital Annex in Ugbokolo, Senator Moro’s village, completed under the Governor’s direct mandate—a stark contrast to the Senator’s legislative record. Other achievements cited were the ongoing construction of the Okokolo-Obagaji-Agagbe Road, a route Moro repeatedly failed to deliver on as a campaign promise, and the Ado-Igumale-Aguila Road and Oju-Awagir Road, showcasing the Governor’s commitment to infrastructural development.

Additionally, the successful rehabilitation of the Otobi Water Works in Otukpo, previously abandoned by the former administration, was praised for restoring essential services and bringing life back to citizens. The local government chairmen also lauded Governor Alia for prioritizing security, noting that five of the nine local government areas in Zone C, previously grappling with critical security challenges, are now entirely safe due to his professional and well-coordinated security architecture. His efforts, including donating vehicles, motorcycles, and financial support to security agencies and local chairmen, were further commended.

The group passed a vote of confidence on Governor Alia for his significant developmental achievements across Benue State, particularly in Benue South. This move further legitimizes the break with Senator Moro, with ALGON officials celebrating Alia’s inclusive governance model, including the historic appointment of six capable sons and daughters of Benue South into his Executive Cabinet.

As political fault lines deepen, this public rejection underscores a significant shift in Zone C’s leadership dynamics, setting the stage for a contentious future in Benue’s political landscape.
