Benue SEMA Boss Sir James Iorpuu Visits BSUTH, Commiserates with Kwande Attack Victims

The Permanent Secretary of the Benue State Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management/Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Sir James Iorpuu, on Monday, March 9, 2026, visited the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) in Makurdi to commiserate with victims of the recent Fulani herdsmen attack in Kwande Local Government Area.

Sir Iorpuu was received by the Chief Medical Director of BSUTH, Dr. Terungwa Stephen Hwande, during the visit. The SEMA boss expressed deep sympathy for the victims rushed to the hospital on Friday, March 6, 2026, following the deadly assault. He commended the hospital management under Dr. Hwande for the prompt and quality medical care provided to the injured.

According to Sir Iorpuu, seven victims were received at BSUTH, but tragically, a four-year-old child succumbed to injury-related complications. The remaining six patients are reported to be recuperating steadily under close medical supervision.

The Permanent Secretary disclosed that other victims from the same attack are currently receiving treatment at hospitals in Adikpo, Kwande LGA, with assurances that any in critical condition would be referred to BSUTH for advanced care.

Dr. Hwande appreciated Governor Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia and SEMA for their swift intervention and support. He highlighted the positive impact of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between SEMA and BSUTH, which has significantly improved access to healthcare for victims from Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps and communities affected by herdsmen attacks under the sponsorship of the Benue State Government.

The CMD also commended Sir Iorpuu for his collaboration with the hospital in ensuring treatment for patients from IDP camps, noting that several such patients have undergone successful surgeries for conditions including appendicitis, fibroids, and other medical cases with SEMA support.

The visit underscores the state government’s ongoing commitment to supporting victims of violence through coordinated emergency response, medical care, and rehabilitation efforts in affected communities.
