The Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aondover Berger Alfred Embergera, has given a 15-day ultimatum to the contractor handling the renovation of the Assembly Complex. The contractor must complete the project by the end of October, or face a probe by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
The ultimatum was issued on Wednesday, October 16, 2025, during an inspection of the project site alongside other lawmakers. The inspection revealed that the contractor had abandoned the site and locked up the complex, despite receiving full payment for the job. Speaker Embergera described the situation as unacceptable, condemning the delay and noting that lawmakers have been forced to conduct plenary sessions using plastic chairs due to the incomplete renovation.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Michael Zape, the Speaker further disclosed that the House may summon the Ministry of Works to provide contract documents for a comprehensive review of the project’s terms and specifications. He stressed that the contractor must meet the deadline, failing which the Assembly would petition the EFCC and ICPC to launch a fraud investigation.
Rt. Hon. Embergera reaffirmed the Assembly’s determination to ensure that the 2026 budget presentation by the Executive Governor of Benue State takes place in a fully renovated and functional legislative complex. The development has sparked concerns over accountability and the effective use of public funds, with lawmakers vowing to see the matter through to a resolution.
