The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is set to hold a nationwide rally on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, including in Benue State, as part of its efforts to press the Federal Government to address its long-standing demands. The announcement was made during a press conference at the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti, where ASUU’s Zonal Coordinator, Adeola Oyebisi Egbedokun, outlined the union’s plans.
In Benue State, universities such as the Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University (JSTU) (formerly Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi) and Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi (MOAUM) (formerly Benue State University) are expected to participate in the rallies, with academic activities likely to be suspended during the demonstrations. The rallies mark ASUU’s first major response to the government’s failure to address critical issues affecting university education, signaling the possibility of further action, including a potential strike.
Egbedokun emphasized that ASUU has been patient, engaging in dialogue with the government for over two years without resorting to strikes. However, he warned that the union’s patience is wearing thin. “If the government continues to play games with the future of our universities, then it must bear the consequences of the storm that will follow,” he stated.
The National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU has given the Federal Government until August 28, 2025, to respond to its demands. Failure to meet these demands could lead to escalated actions, which may disrupt academic activities across Benue State and the nation.
The planned rally has sparked concerns among students and parents in Benue, who fear another disruption to the academic calendar. Residents of Makurdi and other parts of the state are urged to stay informed as the situation unfolds.
