The All Progressives Congress (APC) Benue State Chapter has issued a strong condemnation of the unlawful detention of activist Asom Dzahamen Jerry, who was arrested on September 15, 2025, by the Anti-Cyber Crimes and Narcotics Unit of the Nigerian Police Force, Benue Command. Initially reported missing, Jerry has been held in detention without charges or formal notification of any offense, raising serious concerns about violations of his constitutional rights under Sections 35 and 36 of the 1999 Constitution.
According to a press release signed by Daniel Ihomun, State Publicity Secretary of APC Benue State, the situation escalated when the Chief Magistrate Court I ordered Jerry’s arraignment or release on liberal bail terms on September 17, 2025. Shockingly, the police have defied this court order, further exacerbating the abuse of Jerry’s rights and undermining the judiciary.
The APC Benue State Chapter has labeled the detention as a grave assault on democracy, the rule of law, and the rights of Benue citizens. The party has called for immediate compliance with the court’s directive, warning that any failure to do so threatens the integrity of the legal system.
As the situation develops, public attention remains focused on the actions of the Nigerian Police Force and the response of state authorities. The APC’s stance underscores growing tensions over civil liberties and judicial authority in the region.
